Online dating has been around for a long time. However, Seeking Sugar wanted to offer a more direct, premium alternative to the swipe-based apps that dominate the market.
Context
Seeking Sugar is a premium dating website for people looking for love. It targets an upscale audience who prefer not to wait for a match to happen. Instead, members simply send a message.
Two things set the platform apart. First, it is a paid, subscribers-only service. Second, it skips swipe-to-match mechanics entirely. Both choices then shaped the build.
Goals
- Run the site as a members-only, pay-to-use platform.
- Let members contact people they are interested in directly.
- Allow members to build rich, detailed profiles.
- Give members control over who can see their personal information.
- Help members find relevant people by location, age and gender.
Our approach
A subscription platform has to justify its price. For this reason, every feature needed to feel considered and give members a reason to stay subscribed.
In addition, privacy was just as important. Members share personal details on a dating profile, so they need clear control over who sees what. So we treated privacy as a core part of the design rather than a setting buried in a menu.
Finally, direct messaging changes how people use a dating site. Because there's no swiping, members rely on profiles and search to decide who to contact. Our UI and UX design work therefore focused on making profiles informative and discovery easy.
Execution
Our web development team built the Seeking Sugar website with the following features.
Subscriber-only access
The site is a pay-to-use platform open to subscribers only. In other words, membership is what unlocks the community and its features.
Private, direct messaging
Unlike swipe-to-match apps, Seeking Sugar lets members contact the people they are interested in directly. So they just send a private message to start a conversation.
Detailed member profiles
Members can upload a range of information to their profiles. This includes profile photos, details about their appearance, annual income, hobbies and interests, and more.
Privacy toggle
A privacy toggle lets each member decide who can access their profile information. They can make it public or restrict it to specific people.
Discover section
The discover section helps members find a potential match. They can filter by location, age and gender to see the most relevant profiles.
Outcome
Seeking Sugar now operates as a subscribers-only dating website with direct private messaging. Members build detailed profiles and decide for themselves who can see their information. In addition, the discover section lets them search for people who match their preferences.
Key takeaways from the Seeking Sugar case study
- Privacy controls build trust. When users share personal data, giving them clear control over visibility is essential, not optional.
- Your business model shapes the product. A paid membership needs features that feel worth paying for every month.
- Removing a common feature can be a differentiator. Skipping swipe-to-match made direct messaging and search the heart of the experience.
- Good filters reduce frustration. Simple search by location, age and gender helps members find relevant profiles quickly.
