On demand cleaning services
Lazy Case Study: An On-Demand Cleaning Platform for Hong Kong
This Lazy case study explains how Spacebar built an on-demand cleaning booking platform for busy households in Hong Kong. Clients book and manage services through a website and app, while cleaners pick up jobs through an app of their own.

Time is money in Hong Kong. Lazy built its business on a simple idea: busy professionals would gladly hand over their chores to someone they can trust.
Context
Hong Kong's fast-paced city lifestyle leaves working professionals with little time for housekeeping. Lazy saw an opportunity in that gap. It set out to take chores off people's hands by connecting them with professional cleaners, cooks, nannies and maintenance staff.
The service model depended on flexibility. Some households need a one-off clean before guests arrive. Others, on the other hand, want help every week for months. Lazy therefore needed technology that could handle both, without making booking feel like paperwork.
Goals
- Let anyone in Hong Kong book a home-cleaning service without hassle.
- Offer subscription plans that each client can shape to suit their home.
- Make it easy to change bookings after they are made.
- Give cleaners a fair, simple way to find and accept work.
- Keep households and cleaners in touch about tasks and special requests.
Our approach
Lazy runs a two-sided service, so we planned for two very different users.
Clients care about convenience and control. They want to set up a plan once and adjust it when life changes. Cleaners, on the other hand, care about where the job is, what it pays and whether it fits their schedule.
Rather than force both into one interface, we gave each side its own experience. The website serves as an easy front door for new requests. The mobile apps, in turn, handle the day-to-day running of the relationship.
Execution
Our mobile app development and web development teams delivered the following features.
Customisable subscriptions
Clients can tailor every plan. Clients choose the types of service they need, plus the frequency and duration of each visit. They can also opt for a single, one-off service or a monthly subscription.
Booking management for clients
Clients request a cleaner through the website and then manage bookings in the mobile app. From there, they can skip a session, reschedule or ask for a particular cleaner. Payments are handled in the app as well.
A dedicated app for cleaners
Cleaners have their own app with its own interface. Orders reach them based on their location and their preferred wage for each job. They then choose the jobs they can commit to.
Real-time chat
To strengthen two-way communication, we added in-app messaging between households and cleaners. Both sides can share tasks and specific requests in real time, so there are fewer surprises on the day.
The Lazy brand also has a Chinese-language website, which you can see in our Lazy portfolio project.
Outcome
Lazy now has a booking platform that lets Hong Kong households subscribe to home cleaning on their own terms. Clients can also change plans and pay without calling anyone. Meanwhile, cleaners choose jobs that suit their location and expected pay, and both sides can talk directly in the app.
Key takeaways from the Lazy case study
- Flexibility is a feature. Skip, reschedule and choose-your-cleaner options reduce cancellations and support calls. Plan them in from the start.
- Both sides of a marketplace need a good experience. If service providers find your app frustrating, customers will feel it too.
- Let providers choose their work. Matching jobs by location and preferred pay helps cleaners commit to bookings they can actually keep.
- Build communication into the product. In-app chat keeps job details in one place instead of scattered across phone messages.
