Food Crush Website Design: Helping Foodies Discover Where to Eat

Food Crush is a community where people discover new places to eat and share their experiences with other foodies. For a platform like this, the website is the product. So it had to make browsing restaurants enjoyable. It also had to keep people coming back for ideas.

So Spacebar took on the complete web development and the creative UI and UX design. This page covers the look and feel of the website. However, the Food Crush case study explains the wider platform, including its app, map directions and social features.

A bright, appetising brand system

The design uses one warm coral for the header, buttons and accents. Everything else stays white, so restaurant photos carry the colour. A simple heart-shaped icon sits beside the lowercase "foodcrush" wordmark, which keeps the tone light.

Discovery in a couple of taps

The homepage asks where to eat in Penang and answers straight away. Quick chips for Hokkien mee, curry mee, laksa, seafood and cafés start a search in one tap. Below them, a carousel of restaurant cards shows a photo, a star rating and a name. Meanwhile, a city selector and a search bar stay in the header for anyone who knows what they want.

Collections, search and a place for owners

Search results show a strip of photos for every restaurant. They also show its address and opening status. Meanwhile, a sidebar suggests collections such as famous street food, Korean barbecue and the best coffee spots in Penang. On mobile, collection articles also list how many places they include. There is also a dedicated section inviting restaurant owners to add or update their details.

Usage figures for Food Crush aren't part of this showcase, because the client hasn't approved any for release.
